Wild Mother Coyotes bring their little ones into this world with the greatest of care, and strive with all their being for the survival of their little ones. What would a Mother Coyote say to women today, on Mother’s day? Listen, and you will hear….
I, like you have felt life within me from early on, I have prepared for my little ones coming….creating a safe, warm den for their birth. I with no assistance from a midwife or doctor gave birth to my little ones, cleaning and caring for them, tucking them under my warm fur to feed at my breast. I was not truly alone, as my mate stood anxiously outside the den, bringing food to me and wishing to protect us from danger.
We are Coyote, my pups, when they grow up, have much work to do on Maine’s landscape to keep her healthy and rich with life. I myself and my mate need to have peace and safe places to bring our little ones up to be excellent hunters. This is our work here, this is what we were given to do by Nature’s Law. I cannot fulfill my role as a mother here on the earth, if my life is taken away when my pups are so little and depend on me. And I cannot do it alone, I need my mate to help me bring up my pups. If my mate is killed, we will suffer and sruggle to survive.
You who are mothers, I ask you to help stop the cruel killing of my race here in Maine. Use your power, the power of the woman to speak to your lawmakers to end this persecution. My pups did not come into this world to be orphans without parents, just as yours have not.
